COSHH stands for the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations. These Regulations require employers to control exposure to hazardous substances to prevent ill health.
COSHH is the law that requires employers to control substances that are hazardous to health. The purpose of the COSHH regulations is to minimise the risks associated with substances that are hazardous to the health of you and your employees, thereby reducing the number of people developing illnesses through exposure to harmful substances.
Using chemicals or other hazardous substances at work can put people’s health at risk. The law requires employers to control exposure to hazardous substances to prevent ill health by complying with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH).
Hazardous substance can be any substance, whether solid, liquid or gas, that may cause harm to your health. Hazardous substances are classified on the basis of their potential health effects, whether acute (immediate) or chronic (long-term).
We have considered the generic risks associated with specific chemicals and developed a generic CoSHH assessment which is the starting point for you to tailor the CoSHH assessment to suit your company.
